Ayurveda, a Sanskrit term meaning "The Science of Life", is among the oldest and most comprehensive holistic healing and medical systems, having originated in India over 5,000 years ago.
Ayurveda and Yoga are sister sciences that work in harmony to create and maintain optimal health and wellbeing.
Ayurveda's wisdom, deeply rooted in nature and focused on creating balance and harmony among the mind, body, and spirit, guides us in aligning with nature's rhythms and cycles. It instructs us on using diet, rituals, and practices to establish and maintain a healthy, happy, disease-free, and balanced life.
Here are a few key words in Ayurveda:
Prana: original creative life force/ life force energy
Doshas: individual mind-body constitution based on nature's elements and energies
Agni: digestive fire and metabolic power
Dhatus: bodily tissues
Srotas: the body's essential channels of transportation & circulation
Malas: waste products generated from food digestion and tissue metabolism
The three main pillars of health in Ayurveda are:
1. Ahara (Food)
2. Nidra (sleep)
3. Brahmacharya (management of sexual activity and vital energy)
Being aware and effectively managing these areas are crucial for maintaining daily balance, achieving optimal health, and ensuring wellbeing.
Ayurveda is not centered around symptoms management, but instead it uses methods to determine the root cause of illnesses and diseases.
Ayurveda is a beautiful path of self-discovery, balance, peace, JOY, and health.
Ayurveda's definition of good health:
One who is established in the Self, who has balanced Doshas (primary life-force), balanced Agni (digestive fire), properly formed Dhatus (tissues), proper elimination of Malas (bodily waste), well-functioning bodily processes, and whose mind, soul, and senses are full of bliss is called a healthy person.
